Frequently asked questions

How do I choose an Italian language school in Italy?
Look at three numbers before the price. The real lesson length: twenty hours of 45 minutes is fifteen real hours, of 60 minutes it is twenty. How many people are actually in the class in high season, not the stated maximum. And the total including enrolment, materials and housing.
How much does an Italian course in Italy cost?
An intensive group course runs about 200–300 euros a week. A one-off enrolment fee is almost always added, in Italy between 50 and 90 euros, and books, housing, activities and the exam fee may be charged separately. Always ask for the total.
Which Italian certificate should I choose?
The four recognised by the Italian state are CILS, CELI, PLIDA and CERT.IT: they are worth the same, only the exam format and sessions differ. Italian citizenship requires level B1, university enrolment usually B2.
How long does it take to move up a level?
The usual reference is about two hundred hours of guided lessons to move from one level of the European Framework to the next: with an intensive course of twenty hours a week, roughly ten weeks. One or two weeks will not change your level, but they unlock speaking.
