Studying Italian in Tuscany
A third of all the schools on this site are in Tuscany, and that is no accident: standard Italian grew out of Florentine, and for centuries people who wanted the «right» language have come here. For a beginner it really is the most comfortable place, because what you study in the book is what you hear at the bar.
The real choice is between Florence and the rest. Florence has the widest offer and the strongest competition between schools, but also the largest number of foreigners: it is easy to end up speaking English. The smaller towns of the region, Siena, Lucca, Arezzo, Montepulciano, have fewer courses and more Italian around them.
It costs more than the Italian average, accommodation in Florence above all. The best time is April to June and September to October: July and August are hot and crowded, and classes fill weeks in advance.
