Studying Italian in the Veneto

The Veneto concentrates its schools in three very different cities. Venice is the most wanted and the hardest to live in: expensive, full of tourists, and finding Italians to talk to takes effort. Verona and Padua are cheaper, more ordinary, and for learning they often work better.

The local language is Venetian, which has a literature of its own and is still widely heard, especially outside the historic centres. It is not frightening: the Italian spoken here is clear and fairly slow, and the main Venetian rule, double consonants disappearing, takes a day to learn.

Costs are around the Italian average, Venice aside. The best period is spring and early autumn; summer on the plain is humid and heavy, and in Venice it is the worst possible moment for anyone who wants to talk to a local.
