Candidates arrive imagining a grammar test and find something quite different: a practical exam about whether you can function in Italian. What makes the Cittadinanza version special
The Università per Stranieri di Siena designed this module specifically for citizenship applications. Compared with the full CILS B1 it is shorter and focused on the four practical skills, which makes it a merciful format for working adults. The four sections, and how to train each
Listening. Recorded audio, played a fixed number of times, at natural speed. In my experience this is the section that decides the exam, and it rewards a very specific kind of training: repeated listening with a transcript, done daily. My full method is in training B1 listening.
Reading. Short practical texts with comprehension tasks. This is the section that graded reading quietly prepares for months in advance: a candidate who has read three B1 novels does not fear a B1 announcement or article. Writing. Short guided texts, typically practical ones such as a message or a letter. Examiners reward function over flourish; I explain what that means concretely in the writing section guide.
Speaking. A conversation with the examiner on familiar topics. It tests exactly what the CEFR promises at B1: holding your own without rehearsed monologues. Daily reading aloud and real conversation practice are the preparation; a teacher for even a handful of sessions changes this section noticeably.
How thresholds work
You pass by reaching the threshold in the sections, not by a shining average. A brilliant reading score does not rescue a failed listening. This single fact should design your preparation: train your weakest section hardest, and verify all four with complete, timed simulations before you book.
