The rule: the imperfetto

The imperfetto is the background tense: how things were, what people used to do, what was going on. Da bambino passavo le estati dai nonni: no beginning, no end, just the scene.

The conjugation (the most regular there is)

parl-AREav-EREdorm-IRE
ioparlavoavevodormivo
tuparlaviavevidormivi
lui / leiparlavaavevadormiva
noiparlavamoavevamodormivamo
voiparlavateavevatedormivate
loroparlavanoavevanodormivano
Only one truly irregular verb: essere (ero, eri, era, eravamo, eravate, erano). Then fare (facevo), dire (dicevo), bere (bevevo): irregular only in the stem.
