The rule: the passato remoto

The passato remoto is the tense of the completed tale: mio bisnonno partì nel 1902 e non tornò mai più. It lives in novels, in history and in Southern speech: in the North you read it, in Sicily you hear it at the market.

The regular forms

parl-AREcred-EREpart-IRE
ioparlaicredettipartii
tuparlasticredestipartisti
lui / leiparlòcredettepartì
noiparlammocredemmopartimmo
voiparlastecredestepartiste
loroparlaronocredetteropartirono
Irregulars follow the 1-3-3 pattern (irregular io, lui, loro; regular tu, noi, voi): fui/fosti/fu, dissi/dicesti/disse, feci/facesti/fece, ebbi, vidi, venni, seppi, nacqui, scrissi. These are enough to recognise them in novels.
