Graded Readers vs Parallel Text: which actually works

What each one is

Parallel text puts the original on one page and a translation on the facing page. Nothing is simplified. You read the real text and check yourself against the translation.

A graded reader rewrites the text at a defined level (controlled vocabulary, shorter sentences) with footnotes and a glossary, and no translation of the whole.

The problem with parallel text

Your eye goes to the language you understand. This is not a failure of discipline; it is how reading works. Within a chapter most people are reading the English and glancing at the Italian, and finish the book having read a translation with decoration.

Parallel text also leaves the original difficulty intact. At B1 you are still facing B2 or C1 sentences, and the translation removes the pressure that would otherwise force you to work them out.

Where parallel text is genuinely better

• Poetry. Simplifying a poem destroys it. Here the facing translation is the only honest option.
• Very high levels. At C1 the translation stops being a crutch and becomes a comparison: useful, and interesting.
• Short texts you will reread. Songs, arias, a single story.

Where a graded reader wins

Everywhere between A1 and B2, which is where nearly all learners actually are. You read continuously in Italian, you meet the same controlled vocabulary often enough for it to stick, and the footnote handles the one word per paragraph you cannot guess, without ever showing you a full English sentence to escape into.

The version I make sits in the middle on purpose: the text is Italian throughout, graded to level; the notes, the glossary and the questions are in English. You never leave the Italian, and you are never stuck.

Below B2, graded. Poetry and opera, parallel. At C1, read the original and keep a translation in another room.
