The essentials
- padre / madre: father / mother (formal); papà / mamma in daily use
- figlio / figlia: son / daughter; figli: children (any gender)
- fratello / sorella: brother / sister
- marito / moglie: husband / wife
- nonno / nonna: grandfather / grandmother
- nipote: grandson / granddaughter AND nephew / niece (context tells you which)
- zio / zia: uncle / aunt
- cugino / cugina: cousin (m/f)
In-laws and beyond
- suocero / suocera: father-in-law / mother-in-law
- cognato / cognata: brother-in-law / sister-in-law
- genero / nuora: son-in-law / daughter-in-law
- patrigno / matrigna: stepfather / stepmother
- figliastro / figliastra: stepson / stepdaughter
The possessive rule you must know
With single family members (singular), you DROP the article: mio padre, tua sorella, suo fratello.
But: with plurals, or with affectionate forms (mamma/papà), you keep it: i miei genitori, la mia mamma.
