What's realistic at 6 months

With 45-60 minutes daily study:

  • A2 is fully achievable: you'll be able to handle everyday life in Italy, pass the CILS A2 for citizenship.
  • Weak B1 if you're intense (1.5+ hours daily, active speaking).
  • Fluent B2: no, you'd need 12-18 months.

This assumes you already speak a European language. Speakers of Spanish, French, Portuguese can go faster (A2 in 3 months, B1 in 6).

The 6-month roadmap

  • Month 1: pronunciation, present tense, essere/avere, numbers, basic greetings. Learn 300 words.
  • Month 2: passato prossimo, prepositions, direct object pronouns. 600 total words. Start listening to slow Italian podcasts.
  • Month 3: imperfetto, articles system, family/food/work vocabulary. 900 words. Start conversation exchange.
  • Month 4: future, conditional, more pronouns. 1,200 words. Consume Italian content daily.
  • Month 5: imperative, reflexive, subjunctive intro. Practice speaking daily. Take CILS A2 mock test.
  • Month 6: review, weak spots, test simulation. Take CILS A2.

What makes or breaks it

  • Daily consistency > long weekend sessions.
  • Speak from week 1, even badly. Delay = plateau.
  • Consume real Italian (podcasts, TV) from month 2: you need ear training.
  • Track vocabulary: spaced repetition beats re-reading.
