The basic structure

Passato prossimo = auxiliary (essere or avere) + past participle.

  • Regular -are →︎ past participle in -ato: parlare →︎ parlato
  • Regular -ere →︎ past participle in -uto: credere →︎ creduto
  • Regular -ire →︎ past participle in -ito: dormire →︎ dormito

Example: Ieri ho parlato con Maria. (Yesterday I spoke with Maria.)

Essere or avere?

The trickiest part. Rules of thumb:

  • Movement or state change →︎ essere: andare, venire, arrivare, partire, entrare, uscire, nascere, morire, diventare.
  • Everything else →︎ avere: mangiare, parlare, comprare, leggere, dormire...
  • Reflexives →︎ always essere: mi sono lavato.

When you use essere, the past participle agrees with the subject: Maria è andata. Marco è andato. I bambini sono andati.

Key irregular past participles

  • essere →︎ stato / avere →︎ avuto
  • fare →︎ fatto / dire →︎ detto
  • vedere →︎ visto / venire →︎ venuto
  • leggere →︎ letto / scrivere →︎ scritto
  • prendere →︎ preso / mettere →︎ messo
  • aprire →︎ aperto / chiudere →︎ chiuso
