Reading Grazia Deledda in Simple Italian: Canne al vento at B1

Why she was overlooked, and why that is changing

Grazia Deledda wrote about Sardinia: shepherds, ruined noble families, guilt, superstition and a landscape that does not care about any of it. She was self-taught, provincial by the standards of Roman literary society, and a woman. For most of the twentieth century Italian criticism filed her under regional interest.

She is now read as one of the strongest novelists of her generation, and the second Italian ever to take the Nobel for literature.

Canne al vento, 1913

Three impoverished sisters, the last of a noble family, hold on to a crumbling house. Efix, their servant, has spent his life paying off a sin nobody talks about. Then a nephew arrives from the mainland and starts pulling threads.

The title is the whole book: reeds in the wind, people bent by fate and never quite broken by it.

Why it works at B1

Deledda’s Italian is clear and concrete. She describes what things look like, what people do, what the weather is doing. There is very little abstraction and almost no rhetoric, which is exactly what an intermediate reader needs.

If your family came from Sardinia, this is the book. There is very little else in translation, and almost nothing at a readable level.
