Reading Verga in Simple Italian: where to start with verismo

Verga did something no Italian novelist had done: he wrote about poor people without pitying them, and let them speak.

Two Vergas, and most people only know one

The famous Verga is the Sicilian one: I Malavoglia, Cavalleria rusticana, fishermen and stone villages and families destroyed by one bad decision. That is verismo, the Italian answer to French naturalism, and it is where the literary histories stop.

But before Sicily there was a first Verga, writing about the cities: artists, money, women, disillusion. Eva, published in 1873, belongs to that period. It is shorter, lighter in construction, and far more approachable for a learner.

Why Verga is hard in the original, and what a graded edition fixes

Verga invented a technique to make his characters sound Sicilian while writing in Italian: he bent Italian syntax and proverbs towards the rhythms of Sicilian speech. It is magnificent, and for a learner it is a wall. You cannot tell what is a mistake, what is dialect and what is style.

A graded edition keeps the story and the point of view and takes the wall down. You get the world; you do not get the philology.
