Tropea at a glance
Caffè Italiano Club is in Tropea (Calabria). Outside the classroom this is where the language gets practised: at the coffee counter, in the square, at the market.

Piccola Università Italiana TropeaEvents this year
The city's big festivals, food fairs and cultural seasons through the year. They're not just entertainment: they're the best training ground for your Italian. At a local festival you end up ordering, asking directions, chatting with locals: the real language, the kind books don't teach. If you can, line up a week of your course with one of these.
Feste patronali d'estate In summer Tropea and the surrounding villages celebrate their saints with processions, illuminations and fireworks over the cliffs. Genuine popular festivals: excellent for the vocabulary of Calabrian traditions. | summer |
Sagra della cipolla rossa In summer Tropea's famous red onion gets its own festival, with tastings, stalls and music. A tasty chance for food vocabulary and for chatting at the table with Calabrians. | summer |

What not to miss in Tropea
- Santa Maria dell'IsolaA Benedictine sanctuary on a rock that really was an island: the sandy strip joining it to the coast built up over the centuries. You climb up a stairway carved into the stone.
- Centro storico a picco sul mareThe town sits on a sandstone cliff some sixty metres high, its noble palaces looking out over the Tyrrhenian. Beneath it run cellars and passageways cut into the rock.
- Capo VaticanoA granite headland with small coves and one of the widest sunsets in the south: on clear days you can see Stromboli smoking on the horizon. The lighthouse dates from 1885.
Planning your Italian course in Tropea: fly into Lamezia Terme (SUF), book the course 2–3 weeks ahead (classes fill up faster in high season, June–September) and, if you can, match your study week with one of the city events listed below: using your Italian at a local festival is worth a week of lessons. And between lessons, there's the sea.
