Roma at a glance

Kappa Language School is in Roma (Lazio). Outside the classroom this is where the language gets practised: at the coffee counter, in the square, at the market.

Events this year

The city's big festivals, food fairs and cultural seasons through the year. They're not just entertainment: they're the best training ground for your Italian. At a local festival you end up ordering, asking directions, chatting with locals: the real language, the kind books don't teach. If you can, line up a week of your course with one of these.

Natale di Roma
On 21 April Rome celebrates its founding (753 BC) with costumed parades, historical re-enactments at the Forums and fireworks at the Circus Maximus. A living immersion in Roman history: excellent for historical vocabulary and for seeing how much Romans love their city.
21 April
Estate Romana
From June to September Rome fills with open-air cinema, concerts along the Tiber and neighbourhood festivals. The long evenings are the ideal moment to practise Italian outside the classroom, ordering an ice cream or chatting at a free concert.
June–September
Festa del Cinema di Roma
In October the Auditorium hosts premieres, directors and actors from all over the world. Even without a ticket the city breathes cinema: perfect listening practice with the Italian of red carpets and interviews.
October
Internazionali di tennis
In May the Foro Italico hosts one of the most important tournaments in the world. Sports vocabulary, numbers and live crowd support turn these days into a laboratory of colloquial Italian.
May
Sei Nazioni di rugby
Between February and March Rome hosts Italy's home matches. Pubs and the stadium fill with fans: an informal setting, perfect for picking up exclamations, chants and everyday Italian.

What not to miss in Roma

  1. Colosseo e Fori ImperialiThe centre of the ancient world, walkable in half a day. Its official name is the Flavian Amphitheatre: 'Colosseum' comes from the colossal statue of Nero that once stood beside it.
  2. Musei Vaticani e San PietroThe Sistine Chapel and the dome: always book ahead. The Swiss Guard has served here without interruption since 1506, and is still made up solely of Swiss citizens.
  3. Pantheon e TrastevereThe Rome you live in the evening, between squares and trattorias. The Pantheon's dome, in Roman concrete, is still after two thousand years the largest in the world without steel reinforcement.
Best airport: Roma Fiumicino (FCO)

Planning your Italian course in Roma: fly into Roma Fiumicino (FCO), book the course 2–3 weeks ahead (classes fill up faster in high season, June–September) and, if you can, match your study week with one of the city events listed below: using your Italian at a local festival is worth a week of lessons.
