Chianti, Barolo, Prosecco, Etna: whole holidays are planned around Italian wine. A visit to a cantina is a small conversation with someone proud of what they make, and a few words of Italian make it a much better one.

Here's how to book, how to order in an enoteca, what the label says, and the questions that get a sì or a no.

Say it now: the phrases you need at a winery or wine bar

ItalianEnglish

How do you describe a wine you like?

You don't need technical words: mi piace, I like it, è buonissimo, it's delicious, and two pairs of opposites: secco or dolce, dry or sweet, leggero or corposo, light or full-bodied.

To ask for something different, use più: qualcosa di più leggero?, something lighter?

You sayEnglish
Mi piace molto.I like it a lot.
È buonissimo.It's delicious.
Avete qualcosa di più leggero?Do you have something lighter?sì or no
È troppo dolce per me.It's too sweet for me.

Can you buy and ship wine, and what about driving?

There's no shame in saying guido io, solo un assaggio: wineries are used to it and often have a spittoon.

Prendo sei bottiglie.I'll take six bottles.
Guido io, solo un assaggio.I'm driving, just a taste.

How do Italians drink wine, and how is it different from home?

In Italy wine is part of the meal rather than an evening in itself. A glass with lunch is ordinary, a bottle shared over dinner is ordinary, and few people drink wine without food in front of them. What is not ordinary is getting drunk in public, which is frowned upon at any age. Visitors used to rounds in a British pub or to weekend drinking in Scandinavia often notice how slowly Italians drink, and how little.

Rows of vines turned golden yellow in November near Ama, in Chianti
Vineyards near Ama, in Chianti, in November: every Italian region makes its own wine.

Italy is the largest wine producer in the world, with about 44 million hectolitres in 2024, ahead of France, and every one of its twenty regions makes wine, much of it from native grapes. The result is fiercely local drinking: in Piedmont you are offered Barbera and Nebbiolo, on Etna the wines of the volcano, and the best thing to order is almost always the wine from the hills around you. The house wine, vino della casa, served in a carafe, is usually local and perfectly respectable.

A few habits around the glass: Italians toast with cin cin or salute, looking each other in the eye, and some still think toasting with water brings bad luck. If you don't want more, leave your glass nearly full, because an empty glass gets refilled. Alcohol may not be sold or served to anyone under 18, and the drink-driving limit, 0.5 grams per litre and zero for new drivers, is enforced with roadside checks.
