Reverse the three trademarks: unwrap the nominalisation (procedere alla compilazione → compilare), downgrade the vocabulary (munirsi di → portare, istanza → domanda), and give the passive an agent. Si procederà all'erogazione del rimborso is, in Italian, vi rimborseremo.

Q: Why does legal Italian distinguish furto and rapina?

Because the law splits what common speech merges: furto is theft without force, rapina is robbery with violence or threat: different crimes, different penalties. Same precision pairs everywhere: affitto/locazione, omicidio/assassinio. Sector languages are not decoration: they are distinctions with consequences.

Every Italian world has its code: academia writes «il presente contributo si propone di», the doctor «assumere a digiuno», the counter «munirsi di documento». True C2 is not speaking difficult: it is recognising the codes and switching between them without friction.

Italian and English side by side

English bureaucratic style nominalises heavily, so Italian officialese will feel familiar, perhaps too familiar. The C2 skill is translating it back: si comunica che la pratica è stata evasa means simply that the file is done.

Academic Italian loves caution: sembra suggerire, si potrebbe ipotizzare, non è da escludere. It is not insecurity: it is the etiquette of research. Code-switching (explaining «una compressa die» to your grandmother) is the ultimate C2 exercise.

Did you know?

The emblem of burocratese is obliterare il biglietto: a Latin verb meaning “to erase from memory”, used for stamping a bus ticket. Since the 1990s, official plain-language projects have pushed timbrare and convalidare instead: the state, slowly, learning to speak to its citizens in Italian.

Why is ovvero dangerous?

Because it means two opposite-feeling things: in everyday and academic prose, “that is” (la pragmatica, ovvero lo studio del linguaggio in uso); in legal texts, “or” (il presidente ovvero un suo delegato: either one). Misreading it in a contract changes who does what: in legalese, treat every ovvero as an “or” until proven otherwise.
