Combined pronouns

Me lo scaldi? Glielo porto: in the alleys the pronouns travel in pairs.

When an indirect pronoun meets a direct one, they merge: mi + lo = me lo, gli + la = gliela. The order is fixed, indirect first: me lo porta? Glielo chiedo subito.

Italian and English side by side

English keeps object pronouns separate and after the verb: I gave it to him. Italian fuses them into one word before the verb: gliel'ho dato. The order also flips (indirect first, then direct), which is the opposite of the English sequence.

The i becomes e (mi → me), and in the third person everything fuses into one word: glielo works for him, for her and for polite Lei. In the past, agreement follows the direct pronoun: gliel’ho portata.

The most common mistakes

  • gli lo porto subito → glielo porto subito (third person: one single word)
  • mi lo scaldi, per favore? → me lo scaldi (mi becomes me before lo)
  • gliel’ho portato, la spremuta → gliel’ho portata (agreement follows la spremuta)

Did you know?

Pronouns even attach to ecco, which is not a verb at all: eccomi! (here I am), eccolo, eccoli, eccotelo (here it is for you). A little presenting-word inherited from Latin ecce, the same one in ecce homo: two thousand years later, it still takes clitics like a verb.

la visita per le due classi è confermata: ve la segniamo per venerdì 20 alle 9.30.

I biglietti non serve stamparli: ai ragazzi glieli diamo noi all'ingresso, insieme alla mappa. Le audioguide invece sono poche: ve ne possiamo garantire quindici.

Il laboratorio del pomeriggio è la parte più bella: il materiale ce lo mettiamo noi, voi portate solo i grembiuli.

Se vi serve la fattura, ce lo dica entro mercoledì e gliela prepariamo per il giorno stesso.

Frequently asked questions

Where do combined pronouns go with an infinitive?

Attached to the end, as one word: puoi portarmelo? vado a comprartela. With a modal verb you can also let them climb: me lo puoi portare? Both orders are correct: attached is compact, climbed is more colloquial.

How does ne combine with the indirect pronouns?

Like lo/la: the indirect pronoun shifts its vowel and comes first: me ne, te ne, se ne, ce ne, ve ne, gliene. So: ti servono soldi? Te ne presto io. Gliene ho parlato ieri.

In gliel’ho detto, who is glie-?

Potentially everyone: him, her, formal Lei, and in spoken Italian even “them”. Gliel’ho detto can mean I told him, her, you (formal) or them: context disambiguates. If you need precision in writing, unpack it: l’ho detto a lei, l’ho detto a loro.
