Affinché si veda da lontano, purché il tempo regga: a city is a well-built sentence.

What A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 actually mean

A1 to C2 are not this site's invention. They are the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the scale the Council of Europe published in 2001 and updated in 2020 with the Companion Volume. It measures what you can actually do in the language, not how many rules you have memorised. The CILS, CELI and PLIDA exams are calibrated on it, and so are the language requirements for an Italian residence permit and for citizenship.

What you can do at this level

You understand long demanding texts and pick up what is implied. You express yourself fluently and spontaneously without hunting for words, and use the language flexibly for study, work and social life.

Where to put your effort

On your own: reading originals and working on register, from journalism to fiction. With a teacher: writing, because that is where the gap between correct and natural shows.

Coming to Italian from English

Grammar barely gets in the way now. The passato remoto does: English has one simple past, Italian keeps a separate tense for what is cut off from the present, alive in the South even for yesterday. So does the sequence of tenses, where a technically correct sentence still sounds foreign.

Common questions

Who actually needs C1 Italian?

People who study or work in Italian: university, research, qualified roles. For everyday life B2 is enough.

When is the passato remoto used?

For finished events felt as distant, in history and narrative. In the North it has almost vanished from speech; in the South it is used even for yesterday.

Is there a C1 Italian exam?

Yes. CILS, CELI and PLIDA all offer C1, and Italian universities recognise it.
